Seahawks Receiver Kasen Williams Seizes Opportunities In Preseason Win At Chargers

Third-year receiver Kasen Williams found himself heavily involved in the Seahawks passing game on Sunday night against the Chargers.

Kasen Williams made the difficult look routine on Sunday night at the StubHub Center, where the third-year receiver recorded four acrobatic catches worthy of their own highlight reel, which conveniently is embedded for you above.

In the Seahawks' preseason opening win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the former Skyline High School standout and University of Washington product made four grabs for 119 yards to lead all receivers. His quartet of catches all helped set up Seattle touchdowns on the way to a 48-17 Seahawks victory.

"I just wanted an opportunity to show that," Williams said of his performance postgame. "I've been doing it a lot at practice. The people that have been around at practice, the guys in the locker room, they already know. But now it's just a matter of putting it out for the world to see and that's what we did tonight. That's what I was just waiting for was a game where everybody else can see instead of just the guys in the locker room."

Originally signed in 2015 by Seattle after participating in the team's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, Williams has spent a majority of his first two NFL seasons on the Seahawks' practice squad. He was a standout at training camp practice this past Friday and was able to build on that performance in Sunday's game.

"I loved his game tonight," said Seattle head coach Pete Carroll. "He lit up our sidelines. Not because it was one or two, it was because it was four big, substantial plays."

Williams' four catches went for 28, 28, 34, and 29 yards, and each catch looked to outdo the last. All throws came from backup quarterback Trevone Boykin, who had a solid night of his own, with the highlights beginning to roll at the start of the second quarter, when Williams got up over his defender to make a 28-yard back-shoulder catch. He followed that up with another 28-yard catch on a perfectly placed Boykin ball that saw Williams dive in between two defenders to make the play. His third catch was his longest of the night as he wrestled the football away from a Chargers defender on another sideline fade route for a gain of 34 yards. His final grab, meanwhile, showcased a beautiful display of getting both feet in bounds, as he again elevated over his defender to make a toe-tapping sideline grab at San Diego's 1-yard-line.

"When the ball's in the air I just know that it's mine," Williams said. "I've got to get it however I've got to get it, whether it's going up and getting it, waiting for it to come down. But as soon as I see the ball in the air I'm locked in, nothing else matters at the time, nothing else is important, the DB is not even there. I'm just focused on the ball."

As part of a position group that currently features plenty of depth, Williams finds himself in the middle of what has become one of training camp's most competitive battles for a roster spot. While Sunday's game didn't cement him a place on the 53, it did catch the attention of the coaching staff, signaling a step in the right direction for Williams.

"The one he took away was probably the most spectacular, so it was exciting," Carroll said. "He does do that. We've seen him do that a lot. He's been doing that most of his career and so to see him have the opportunity, this is kind of what we talked about, some guys will get the opportunities and whether they seize them or not. He certainly did that tonight."

Said Williams: "I know I've just got to continue to do what I do and the rest will take care of it itself."
