Seahawks Place Linebacker Mike Morgan on Injured Reserve; Promote Linebacker Jordan Tripp From Practice Squad

The Seahawks made a roster move Monday heading into their Week 5 bye.

The Seahawks made a roster move the day after their 27-17 win over the New York Jets, placing Mike Morgan on injured reserve and promoting Jordan Tripp from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters during his Monday afternoon press conference at Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Seattle also waived offensive lineman Terry Poole from injured reserve and released quarterback Jake Heaps from the practice squad on Monday.

Morgan, the team's starting strongside linebacker and a veteran special teams contributor, will undergo surgery for a sports hernia on Tuesday. Through the first four regular-season games the sixth-year pro had posted four total tackles. Carroll said Morgan could be a candidate to return later this season.

"It's about a five-week deal, it could be anywhere from four to six weeks, and four is pretty fortunate," Carroll said. "It's usually five to six weeks, so we'll see where that all sits when we get around that time."

Tripp, a third-year pro out of Montana, originally signed to Seattle's practice squad in early September just before the start of the regular season. He joins a position group that features Brock Coyle, Dewey McDonald, Cassius Marsh, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Bobby Wagner, and K.J. Wright.

Carroll said Pierre-Louis and Marsh, each of whom were competing alongside Morgan for the starting strongside linebacker spot during the preseason, will help fill in at the position for the Seahawks moving forward.

Carroll also announced Monday that rookie defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson, a fifth round pick by Seattle, will have surgery on the hand injury that he's been dealing with. Jefferson's recovery period is expected to run two to three weeks, Carroll said.

"He's already played with a cast on," Carroll said of Jefferson. "And he'll be able to do that we think within two to three weeks."
