Bevell Among NFL's "Most Creative" Playcallers
Former NFL safety turned football analyst Matt Bowen has an Insider piece at ESPN.com looking at the five most creative offensive playcallers in the NFL today and Seattle's Darrell Bevell earns a mention alongside the New England Patriots' Josh McDaniels, the Carolina Panthers' Mike Shula, the New Orleans Saints' Sean Payton, and the Arizona Cardinals' Bruce Arians.
Here's what Bowen had to say about Bevell, one of five individuals who Bowen says maximizes his team's talent to the best:
The Seahawks averaged 26.4 points per game (tied for fourth in the NFL), and ranked third in yards rushing per game (141.8) and fourth in total yards per game (378.6) under Bevell in 2015. This is an offense that utilizes vertical concepts, movement passes and maximizes the skill set of Russell Wilson to add a unique dynamic to the game plan.
We know Wilson brings multiple dimensions because of the zone-read, the boot schemes, the run-pass options and the magic he can create outside of the pocket. But this past season, his game really took off as a pocket passer. Bevell deserves some credit for using his personnel to create matchups in the passing game. Look at the breakout season for Doug Baldwin (14 touchdown receptions) or the electric playmaking ability of Tyler Lockett. Jimmy Graham? He was starting to fit into this system before an injury put him on the shelf for the season.
Yes, Wilson is always going to be a threat to keep the ball off the zone-read (he had 46 carries on quarterback-designed runs in 2015). And Thomas Rawls is a good fit for Bevell's run game out of the gun or in two-back formations where he can get downhill, make one cut and push the ball through the lane. But I love what the Seahawks' coordinator did in creating matchups -- especially for Baldwin -- in the dropback passing game.

We should expect more balance again from Bevell's play-calling in 2016, along with the added dynamic Wilson brings to the field. That's tough to plan against. But given the maturation of Wilson inside of the pocket and the return of Graham, Bevell can get even more creative at scripting matchups to fuel his offense.
