A young quarterback from the University of Wisconsin-Madison emerged in the Seattle Seahawks' 2012 season, winning the starting QB job as a rookie-- his name was Russell Wilson. Wilson was drafted in the third round of the 2012 draft, following two other notable Seahawks players, linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive end Bruce Irvin. Head coach Pete Carroll, having coached the team for only two seasons prior, took the team to the Divisional Round of the playoffs in which they lost to the Atlanta Falcons by a close score of 30-28. The Seahawks finished the season 11-5, an improvement from a 7-9 record in 2011, and it marked Seattle's first winning season since 2007. Their 11 victories were the third-best in franchise history. The squad went 13-3 during the regular season, winning the NFC West and securing the #1 seed for the first time in franchise history. They marched through the NFC side of the playoff bracket with relative ease to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl, another first for the organization. Prior to 2013, the 2005 Seahawks were indisputably the best team in franchise history. The Seahawks were nearly unstoppable on offense in 2005. The offensive line, featuring two future Hall of Famers in Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson, provided plenty of opportunities for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and running back Shaun Alexander. The well-balanced attack scored 452 points, the most in the NFL. Alexander was particularly dominant, leading the league in rushing with 1,880 yards and breaking the single-season touchdown record with 28. He was eventually named the NFL MVP, the only Seahawks player to ever win the award. On the heels of the team's first postseason appearance in franchise history in 1983, the team went 12-4, good for 2nd place in the AFC West and a return trip to the playoffs. The stout defense forced 63 turnovers over the course of the season, including eight in Week 2 vs. the Chargers and six in Week 10 vs. the Chiefs, which featured a record-breaking four returned for touchdowns. Safety Kenny Easley led the league with 10 interceptions en route to being named the AP Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Chuck Knox was also recognized at the league level, being named the NFL Coach of the Year.
