Wednesday Practice Report: Six Seahawks Do Not Participate To Open Week 10

Running back Chris Carson, safety Bradley McDougald, guard D.J. Fluker and more were sidelined with injuries for the Seahawks during Wednesday's practice.

The Seahawks had six players sit out Wednesday's practice at Virginia Mason Athletic Center as the club began preparation for its Week 10 road matchup with the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams.

Three of the six players sidelined Wednesday for the Seahawks were starters who left this past Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers early due to injuries, a group that includes running back Chris Carson (hip), safety Bradley McDougald (knee), and offensive guard D.J. Fluker (calf). Cornerback Neiko Thorpe (groin), receiver Doug Baldwin (groin), and defensive tackle Shamar Stephen (foot) were also held out to open the week.

Meeting with the media prior to Wednesday's practice, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Carson, McDougald, and Fluker would all be held from the day's work.

On Carson, Carroll said, "The soft tissue thing is kind of hanging with him a little bit. This hip thing is still kind of there and we've got to see how it comes out at the end of the week."

Asked if Carson could play in Sunday's game against the Rams without practicing this week, Carroll added, "It depends on the week. It depends how it's going, it depends how he looks and all that. He certainly could play. We've got plenty of guys to go to, we don't have to just rely on one guy right now, so if he's not making it through the week and looking really good and we clear him for the game then we would operate accordingly with that."

Carroll was less specific on the status and Week 10 outlook for McDougald and Fluker, noting that when it comes to McDougald the Seahawks are "going to hold him out for a little bit," while Fluker came back more sore on Wednesday.

"He did come back feeling a little more sore today," Carroll said of the Seahawks' right guard. "So we've just got to take care of him, make sure that we don't push him back too soon."

Thorpe, meanwhile, was injured in practice a couple weeks ago and missed Seattle's past two games as a result. Carroll said the groin injury could keep the team's special teams captain from seeing the field for another couple weeks.

"Neiko pulled his groin in practice a couple weeks ago and he's still working his way back," Carroll said. "A lot of times guys will just get a tweak, he actually pulled it. It's been a couple weeks already, he may have a couple more weeks before he gets back."

An equally long list of players was limited for the Seahawks Wednesday, with guard Jordan Simmons (calf), linebacker Shaquem Griffin (shoulder), cornerback Akeem King (hip), safety Tedric Thompson (quadriceps), linebacker K.J. Wright (knee), and defensive end Dion Jordan (knee) all taking less than a full workload at practice. While Jordan was limited Wednesday with a knee injury, Carroll said the D-lineman's uptick in health has been a contributing factor to his play in recent weeks.

"What's really helping him is he's staying healthy," Carroll said of Jordan. "He's feeling strong and he's getting his rhythm and he's a very aggressive player, plays tough, has given really good effort throughout, so we're just counting on him. I still see him as a very young player, inexperienced player even. He might not think that, but just in his time playing and really getting acclimated to the game and all, he has not had a lot of steady play there that he can build from. But he's starting to get that now that he's been together and been able to stay out there. He'll improve. I think he has a much higher ceiling than we're seeing right now and the more we get him out there, the more he's going to do well."

The Rams held a walk-thru on Wednesday. The only player listed on the team's practice report was running back Todd Gurley (not injury related), who did not participate.
