Seahawks Running Back Thomas Rawls Activated Off Of PUP List

Seahawks injury updates from Pete Carroll's press conference, including news that running back Thomas Rawls is off the P.U.P. list.

Thomas Rawls didn't take part in Sunday's mock game, but when the Seahawks return to practice Tuesday following an off day, the second-year running back is expected to start working his way back into the mix now that he has passed his physical and been activated from the physically unable to perform list.

"He is off the P.U.P.," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Rawls, who missed the first week of camp, the result of last year's season-ending ankle injury. "We'll work him back into practice next week. He looks like he's ready to go, he's really anxious about it. He has been working very hard. I don't know if we'll be able to work him as hard in practice as they have been rehabbing him, so he should be ready to go. We're not going to rush him at all, we'll take our time to get him to feel his confidence and get that back, but it's great to see him back out there. I know it means a lot to him too, he has worked so hard to get here, and now he finally crosses this threshold and he's back with his teammates, so it's a good deal."

Rawls' return to action is a big deal in a big-picture sense because he is coming off of a rookie season in which he was one of the NFL's breakout rookies, leading the league in rushing yards per carry, but his return is also important in the short-term because the Seahawks are dealing with a lot of injuries in their backfield.

Rookies Zac Brooks and C.J. Prosise have both been sidelined in recent days with hamstring injuries, and Christine Michael sat out Sunday's mock game because of illness. Brooks is expected back soon, Carroll said, while Prosise likely won't make it back for Saturday's preseason opener in Kansas City, but "the next week he should be ready to go," according to Carroll.

Other injury updates:

  • Safety Kam Chancellor, who has been sidelined by a minor groin injury, "Should be back Tuesday," Carroll said.
  • Receiver Doug Baldwin, meanwhile, continues to rest after having his Achilles stepped on in practice last week, but Carroll didn't sound concerned about the injury, saying, "Doug, we got to wait and see. He got stepped on his Achilles, it's an unusual injury and it's just taking him some time to get the soreness out of there. It's not a long-lasting thing at all, we don't think, there's no damage to his Achilles at all."
  • Receivers Kasen Williams, Kevin Smith and Antwan Goodley are all dealing with hamstring injuries and sat out Sunday. Deshon Foxx joined the list of receivers sidelined by hamstring injuries when he suffered one early in practice.
  • Jordan Hill, who has been out with a groin injury is "really close to being back," Carroll said. "He should be on the field Tuesday."
  • Defensive end Frank Clark did limited work because of a sore calf that kept him out for a couple of days last week, and Carroll said Clark will be "ready to go full-go Tuesday… We just wanted to make sure we didn't overdo it today."

On tight end Jimmy Graham, who started camp on PUP with Rawls, Carroll said, "They both have worked extremely hard, but we're just going to take a little bit more time with Jimmy." 

  • Additionally, all five players who were waived/injured on Saturday—TE Brandon Cottom, TE Cooper Helfet, RB Tre Madden, DE David Perkins and TE Ronnie Shields—have cleared waivers, meaning they are now on Seattle's injured reserve list and do not count towards the 90-man roster limit.

The Seahawks scrimmaged against one another during the eighth practice of training camp at Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
