Pete Carroll Provides Injury Updates Heading Into First Preseason Game Of 2019

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll shared injury updates as the club readies for its first exhibition game of 2019.

The Seahawks open the 2019 preseason against the Broncos Thursday night at CenturyLink Field, and as has typically been the case this time of season, any Seattle player battling an injury will likely be sitting the exhibition game out, as opposed to during the regular season when players may attempt to push through nagging injury situations.

"Right now, anybody that's even close to having an issue, we hold," Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said following Wednesday's workout at Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

Here's what Carroll had to say about a handful of Seahawks who are battling injuries entering the first week of preseason play.

QB Geno Smith

Starter Russell Wilson will be held from Thursday’s game, Carroll said, which will give Geno Smith, who's been competing with Paxton Lynch for the backup job during training camp, a chance to take the team's starting reps.

"He's going to play in the game, he's going to start the game and get a chance to play some good football for us," Carroll said of Smith. "But we're going to fix him up after that."

Carroll said Smith has "an issue that we're dealing with that we're going to attend to after the game," and while Carroll didn't elaborate or get into specifics on what Smith's issue is, he did state he expects Smith to be ready to play in the team's second preseason game.

"We think he's going to be OK for the second game, too, is what the plan is," Carroll said.

SS Lano Hill

Safety Lano Hill, who fractured his hip in the final regular season game of 2018, started training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list but passed his physical earlier this week.

"He's almost there," Carroll said. "He can't play in this game, but next week by the two sets of practices that we'll have before the next game he should be ready to go. He looks great, it's great to have him back out. With his injury he lost quite a bit of weight. He lost 20 pounds and he had to work his way back up and he looks in beautiful shape right now. He looked great the last couple days, just not enough background to play him yet. But that's a real important player for us to figure into the competition. Lano, he had a really good finish to the year last year and we were really excited about all things that he was doing and so we just need that to be as competitive as can be and by the time he gets back he'll be ready to crank it up. So next week should be really important for him and then the following week would be the one that tells us if he's ready to go for the game."

TE Will Dissly

Tight end Will Dissly, who suffered a torn patellar tendon injury early in the 2018 season, is ahead of schedule in his return, but won't play Thursday, said Carroll.

"We're going to hold Will in this game," he said. "He's done beautifully. He's had his best day since he's been back just yesterday. He looks great, he's ready to go, but we want to wait. Again, we didn't think Will would be this far along, so he's way ahead of schedule and we're just not going to push the issue right now."

TE Ed Dickson

Veteran tight end Ed Dickson underwent surgery on his knee this week.

"He got surgery yesterday on his knee," Carroll said. "Everything went fine. He's here today for the first time, so he's back. I haven't talked to him here, I talked to him last night. But he feels good and he's ready to go. We're hoping that it's a four to five week deal that we can get him back on."

TE Jacob Hollister

Tight end Jacob Hollister strained his groin in the team's mock game at Bothell's Pop Keeney Stadium.

"Jake got a little groin strain early in the big Pop Keeney event we had," Carroll said. "He made it through it, but he's a little bit stiff by it, so we just want to make sure. … Jake has done a really nice job for us. We're really excited about his contribution to us. He's got some different elements of his play that really accents and helps us at that spot, so we're real excited about him."

RB C.J. Prosise

Running back C.J. Prosise has a hip injury and won't play Thursday.

"C.J. has got a little hip thing that's tweaked, he's got a little first-degree sprain that we have to acknowledge and just take care of him," Carroll said. "Just unfortunately, as we've been waiting for C.J. for a long time and unfortunately he came up with a little something. So he's going to miss this game."

RB J.D. McKissic

Running back J.D. McKissic looks to be a game-day decision.

"We don't know about him," Carroll said. "We'll see J.D. in pregame and see how he does. He's got a sore foot."

Rookie Report

  • Seattle's first-round pick L.J. Collier endured what Carroll called a "badly sprained ankle" earlier in training camp. The defensive end won't play Thursday, but is on his way back. "He did visit with the docs, he traveled to do that and (they) gave him a really good update," Carroll said. "Everything's in line and he's out of the boot, he's moving. It should be a normal process now brining him back. As he can handle and tolerate he'll come back to us. It'd be ridiculous for me to make a guess on that one, but real encouraged. It's nothing beyond what we thought and all that kind of stuff, so we're in good shape."
  • Rookie receiver DK Metcalf is "ready to go," Carroll said. Metcalf was held from this past Saturday's mock game with an oblique injury.
  • Rookie linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven will play Thursday, "Burr's going, yeah," Carroll said. "He's going." Burr-Kirven underwent sports hernia surgery this offseason.
  • Rookie running back Travis Homer "has a bit of a quad strain that's going to keep him from going," said Carroll.
  • Rookie offensive lineman Phil Haynes is making his way back from a sports hernia. "Phil has made great progress. He's running and doing some stuff. He's just got to put the weeks behind him just to get back in shape and ready to go."
  • Rookie defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas has been bothered by a back issue. "I talked to Demarcus this morning and the report's back, he's had a couple epidurals to get him back to where he is and he really feels like he's making a turn right now," Carroll said. "He is conditioning and working. After this next game he might have a shot at getting back out there."

The Seahawks and Broncos will meet on Monday Night Football at Lumen Field. Take a look back at photos from past games played between the two teams.
