Ranking Pete Carroll's Playing Career

Like many of his NFL counterparts, Pete Carroll played the game of football before he coached it. Prior to entering the coaching ranks in 1974 as a graduate assistant at University of the Pacific, Carroll, a standout quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back at California's Redwood High School, was a two-time (1971-72) All-Pacific Coast Conference free safety for the Pacific Tigers. 

But where does Carroll's playing career rank among the NFL's 32 current head coaches? Well, Kevin Seifert at ESPN.com recently took on that task and put Carroll in the top half of the League at No. 13, ahead of guys like Dan Quinn (No. 23) and Gus Bradley (No. 22), who were former defensive coordinators for the Seahawks under Carroll.

Here's what Seifert had to say about Carroll's time with the Tigers:

Carroll transferred to Pacific in 1971 from the College of Marin and was an All-Pacific Coast player for the next two seasons. He finished his senior season with two interceptions and got into coaching after an unsuccessful tryout with the World Football League.

Something you might not know: Probably the most interesting thing that happened to Carroll at Pacific was a near-asphyxiation during his time as an assistant coach there. That's the danger of jumping into a Hail Mary celebration pile, Pete. (Watch Carroll recount the moment in this video.)

The No. 1-ranked coach on Seifert's list? That'd be former NFL linebacker and Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, the only active head coach to be named to the Pro Bowl as a player.
