Three decades after the original Overboard's debut with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, a remake of the 1987 film is set for a May 4 release, and it features a longtime Seahawks fan as one of its stars.
Actress Anna Faris, whose hometown lies in nearby Edmonds, Washington, co-stars alongside Eugenio Derbez in the romantic comedy that's set right here in the Pacific Northwest. In the remake, the leading roles are reversed, with Derbez playing the role of rich, selfish playboy and Faris staging as a working class single mother.
Given the film's Pacific Northwest proximity, Seahawks logos, gear and branding are featured prominently throughout the movie, with several of its stars appearing on screen in Seattle blue and green. That element made the film a particularly fun one to work on for Faris, who calls herself "a huge Seahawks fan."
"I brought a ton of my own gear on set, I have a lot of Seahawks gear, and I'm really, really proud to be a fan," she said. "I love the 12s and I love the Seahawks and I love Seattle, so for me that was a huge point of pride."
With the Overboard remake set to hit theaters this week, Seahawks.com caught up with Faris to learn a little bit more about it.
Seahawks.com: What did the original Overboard film mean to you, and what was it like when you were asked to be part of the remake?
Anna Faris: "I think I've watched the original Overboard at least 100 times. It was always my favorite sick-day movie, it was my favorite movie growing up, it still brings me so much joy, and I was terrified when I was asked to be part of the remake because it felt like such huge shoes to fill. At the same time, I was really jealous at the idea of anybody else being part of it, so I'm thrilled."
Seahawks.com: Does being from the Seattle area make you more excited to take part in a film based in the Pacific Northwest? Did it add any more unique moments or elements during filming?
Anna Faris: "I'm a huge Seahawks fan, so it was so exciting that it became such a big part of the storyline. Having grown up there, having been in that cold water a lot as a kid, I thought that I was going to be able to be more brave than I really was when I had to get back in it again. But I had a great time and I'm so proud that the beautiful Pacific Northwest is being honored, and I love our Seahawks."
Seahawks: What was the most enjoyable part of working on Overboard?
Anna Faris: "I love it that Eugenio Derbez created such a family environment. He made everyone feel so loved and I love it that while it is a romantic comedy it's also a movie about family. I love it that he took charge and was such a great leader with all of us. The girls who played my daughters were just so remarkable and so loving. The tears at the end felt very real. It's very much a movie about priorities, and what you find in life."
