John Clayton Joins 710 ESPN's "Wyman & Bob" To Discuss Aldon Smith Signing

The Seahawks added to their list of impressive offseason moves Thursday with the signing of veteran DE Aldon Smith. 12s are likely familiar with Smith given the 44 sacks he amassed as a member of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, but after four whole years out of the NFL, Smith experienced a career renaissance with the Dallas Cowboys last season, recording 5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits over 16 starts. He'll look to bolster a Seahawks defensive line that features fellow newcomers Kerry Hyder Jr. and Al Woods (who's on his third stint in Seattle), along with Carlos Dunlap II, Poona Ford and Benson Mayowa, all of whom the Seahawks were able to retain in free agency after combining for 14.0 sacks with Seattle in 2020.

On Thursday, John Clayton joined Bob Stelton and Dave Wyman of 710 ESPN's "Wyman & Bob" to discuss what Smith brings to the Seahawks' pass rush and how the team's defensive line depth resembles that of the 2013 and 2014 Super Bowl squads.

"You can never have enough good pass rushers, and he's a good pass rusher, so I think it's an excellent move," Clayton said. "You get a guy that last year had five sacks, 50 pressures, he had 20 quarterback hurries … that's pretty good." Clayton noted how Smith adds to an already deep Seahawks defensive front that includes the aforementioned Hyder, Woods, Dunlap and Ford, 2020 draftees Darrell Taylor and Alton Robinson, and L.J. Collier, who is heading into his third season as a pro.

"This team looks like it's going back to 2014, 2013, when they brought in Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, they played like 60 percent of the downs even though they didn't start," Clayton said. "I think what the plan is right now, if you have a six, seven man rotation, and then you have the ability to keep everybody 50 percent or less at the defensive ends, then you're going to be fresher for a 17-game season."

Clayton also mentioned how the Seahawks were willing to take a chance on Smith even with his prior off the field issues because it's a low-risk, high-reward situation. "Obviously when you miss the four years and you have all the suspensions and all the difficulties that he's had, and it's all on him, teams are going to shy away," Clayton said. "At least Seattle, they'll take a little bit of a chance, they'll take a chance on a Josh Gordon. And when you take the chance and you're not risking much money in cap room, it's worth it … I think this is a good move for Seattle."
