Throughout the season Seahawks Insider Tony Ventrella will be working with the Seahawks strength and conditioning staff to answer your questions about strength and fitness.

In this installment of Regence Tips with the Trainer, Tony and Mike discuss pyramiding:

I am taking an advanced weight lifting class at my health club. The instructor is an exercise physiologist. We are learning about "pyramiding" with the weights and he recommended 3 sets beginning with 12 reps, then 8, then 6. We are to increase the weight with each set by 5-10 pounds. Will this sort of workout make me bulkier? I'm trying to achieve a well-toned body with muscle definition. I do not want to be big and bulky. - Susan

According to Mike pyramiding will not make Susan bulkier.  A female athlete would need to do maximum weight to the point of failure at 6 to 8 reps before she would run the risk of becoming bulkier.
