Tavon Austin won’t play for Rams against Seahawks

Posted Dec 29, 2013

Cornerback Walter Thurmond is active for the Seahawks, but wide receiver Tavon Austin will not play for the Rams in Sunday’s regular-season finale at CenturyLink Field.

For the second game in a row, the news regarding the inactive players is more significant for the Seahawks’ opponent.

The Rams will not have Tavon Austin, the rookie who is their second-leading receiver and also punt returner, for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. Austin also missed last week’s game with an ankle injury and was among the inactive players just announced by the Rams.

The Rams will not have left tackle Jake Long, either. He had season-ending knee surgery this week. That means the Rams will start their fourth combination on the offensive line in the past five games – Rodger Saffold, the right guard who moves to left tackle for Long; left guard Chris Williams; center Tim Barnes; Shelley Smith, who steps in at right guard for Saffold; and right tackle Joe Barksdale.

For the Seahawks, cornerback Walter Thurmond is active after returning this week from his league-imposed four-game suspension. But Byron Maxwell will continue to start at right cornerback.

“Byron has played great football for us,” coach Pete Carroll said after practice Friday. “And I think he’s on kind of a rhythm that we want to take out there in a game like this. There’s no reason to put Walter into that situation after just one week of practice. But Walter is ready to play. He’ll be out there and helping us out.”
