Seahawks to face NFL's sixth-toughest schedule in 2014

Posted Apr 25, 2014

For the second consecutive season, the Seahawks will tackle the NFL's sixth-toughest schedule.

The Seahawks' 2014 strength of schedule has been known since this past season wrapped up, but the numbers are worth another look now that the team knows when they'll be playing each game this upcoming season.

Based on their 2014 opponents' winning percentages from a season ago, the Seahawks will play the League's sixth-toughest schedule (.561) this year. Seattle played the NFL's sixth-toughest schedule last year (.516) as well, a season that saw the club finish an NFC-best 13-3, claim the NFC West crown, and go on to win the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

The Seahawks will get a quick taste of the strength of their schedule during the season's first three weeks, when each game they play will come against an opponent that made the playoffs last season. The good news? Two of those three games will come at CenturyLink Field, where the Seahawks have enjoyed a 15-1 record (17-1 including playoffs) the past two seasons. In those first three weeks, they'll play host to the defending NFC North champion Green Bay Packers in Week 1, visit one of last year's AFC wild-card clubs in the San Diego Chargers in Week 2, and come home for a Super Bowl XLVIII rematch with the Denver Broncos in Week 3.

But the toughest stretch of the Seahawks' schedule looks to come during the season's final six weeks, when Seattle will play five games against NFC West opponents. That run includes two matchups with the San Francisco 49ers in a three-week span, the first of which comes on Thanksgiving night in the Bay Area after just four days rest following a game against a physical Arizona Cardinals team.

Since arriving in 2010, coach Pete Carroll has constantly preached to his team about the ability to finish, and how the club finishes those final six weeks will likely go a long way in determining which team - or teams - will represent the division in the postseason.
