Seahawks fan petitions for "Legion of Boom" to join Richard Sherman on cover of Madden NFL 15

Midwest Sea Hawker Jason Coiner is seeking support from his fellow 12s to put the entire "Legion of Boom" on the cover of Madden NFL 15.

Three days after Richard Sherman beat out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the final round of the fan-voting competition to determine which player would be featured on the cover of Madden NFL 15, the Seahawks All-Pro cornerback was lobbying for his "Legion of Boom" teammates who have been integral to his success to join him front-and-center.

"I've been trying to get the Legion of Boom on the cover, and EA has been fighting me," Sherman told reporters on June 9 following the Seahawks' seventh OTA. "So if anybody wants to start a petition to get the Legion of Boom on the cover, here it is, here's an open invitation."

Jason Coiner, a lifelong Seahawks fan and member of the Midwest Sea Hawkers booster club, accepted that open invitation, creating a petition to EA Sports - the video game's developers, highlighting Sherman's request.

"When you think about football, it's not one individual player that wins you a Super Bowl," Coiner said. "It's a team sport, and if you're going to celebrate having somebody on [the cover], it needs to be the team because that's what drove them to succeed. If it wasn't for Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, and Byron Maxwell they wouldn't have been where they are at."

Sherman - the game's third defensive player to make the Madden cover (Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis, 2005; Pittsburgh Steelers S Troy Polamalu, 2010) - agrees with Coiner's assessment, saying he "would never be in the position" to be the game's cover man if not for the stellar play of the rest of Seattle's secondary.

"It's a team sport and he wanted to share that with the team," Coiner said of Sherman's "Legion of Boom"-laden desires. "That's an unselfish act and to me that needs to be pushed because not too many people are like that."

For Coiner, whose petition has garnered more than 750 signatures as of this writing, having a Seahawk on the Madden cover means everything to a fan who has followed the club through the good and the bad.

"It's more or less redemption," said Coiner. "If you stick with your team through thick and thin, you support them through thick and thin, eventually you get rewarded for your loyalty."

Coiner is confident his cover efforts for Sherman and the Seahawks' "Legion of Boom" will amass more than 1,000 signatures - and he'll welcome even more than that. When that time comes, Coiner believes it will deliver a strong message to the makers of Madden NFL 15.

"Just hopefully get them to notice," Coiner said. "Tell them they need to open their eyes to the fact that this is a team sport, the Super Bowl was won by a team, and if somebody's going to give up the cover to have their teammates on there, you should listen."

Regardless of whether or not his petition is successful, Coiner hopes having Sherman as the face of the video game franchise will attract new support for the Seahawks and encourage NFL fans to not only learn more about the boisterous fourth-year pro's efforts on the field, but about his charitable work in the community as well.

And as for the pesky "Madden Curse" potentially affecting not one, but four members of the Seahawks blue-and-green? Coiner doesn't believe in that stuff.

"There's just been some unforunate circumstances out there," Coiner said. "I'm not worried about it.

"I think this year's going to be great," he added. "I think they're going to play hard. I think the chip on their shoulder is there and they're going to go out and do what they can to keep that trophy another year."
