Seahawks, Sounders FC Pro Shop opens at Renton Landing

The success of the Seahawks and Sounders FC on the field has helped lead to the addition of a third Pro Shop at The Landing in Renton - the city where the Seahawks are headquartered and close to where the Sounders practice.

The Super Bowl champion Seahawks and MLS-leading Sounders FC train in and near Renton, respectively, so it only makes sense that the teams would open a third Pro Shop at Renton’s The Landing.

Make that too much sense to Melody Ferkingstad and her family, who were on hand for the grand opening of the newest Pro Shop on Thursday afternoon.

“We came because of the grand opening, just to enjoy the fun, show our support and to watch Blue Thunder and the ribbon ceremony,” said Ferkingstad, who lives in Renton and was accompanied by her husband, Eric, and their daughters, Chloey and Ellie.

“Both teams practice here, so we needed a Pro Shop here.”

Ferkingstad also lent her financial support to the event by purchasing a Seahawks T-shirt and a sweatshirt.

The opening of the first combined Pro Shop on the East Side and South End – the other two are at CenturyLink Field and in downtown Seattle – drew a gathering of some 200 fans. Former Seahawks safety Lawyer Milloy and Sounders FC midfielder Brad Evans handled the ceremonial ribbon cutting, with Sea Gals Brittany and DeDJauna holding the ends of the ribbon and members of Blue Thunder providing the drumroll. Renton mayor Dennis Law also was part of the festivities in welcoming the city’s latest addition.

And director of retail operations Doug Orwiler seconded Ferkingstad’s notion that a Pro Shop in Renton was overdue.

“We’re super excited to be here and basically be able to provide another opportunity for our fans to come in and represent the teams,” he said. “It’s great that we’re so close to the (Seahawks’) headquarters and (Sounders’) practice facility. We have such a strong following throughout the region, but especially here in Renton. So it’s great to be able to expand into this area and be able to better service the fans that live here.”

The Landing Pro Shop is all about location, location, location. It is next to Regal Cinemas and easily recognizable by the larger-than-life photos of Seahawks wide receivers Doug Baldwin and Percy Harvin, quarterback Russell Wilson, cornerback Richard Sherman and free safety Earl Thomas in the windows.

“We have a lot of great neighbors here that draw a lot of business to The Landing and we’re excited to be a part of that,” Orwiler said.

The additions of Milloy and Evans in the ceremony also proved to be an attraction for the fans, as they signed autographs and poised for pictures after their ribbon-cutting duties.

“Obviously it gives you a sense of pride,” Evans said of his team now having a third Pro Shop. “It’s something I’ve been involved with since Day One with the Sounders. And now seeing another downtown store, an expansion of the stadium store and now a store down in Renton where both teams are practicing, it definitely gives you a sense of pride.

“But it also shows you the growth of two sports programs that have now split off, but are doing extremely well.”

For Milloy, who grew up in Tacoma and played at the University of Washington before playing 15 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons and Seahawks, he feels connected to the Super Bowl champions because he was part of the first Pete Carroll team in 2010 and helped groom the All-Pro safety tandem of Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

“You talk about the process, and me being a part of the beginning,” he said. “I may have been thrust into retirement, but also thrust into just being a fan. I can sit back and be a fan of not only just the Seahawks but of the NFL and really see it from a fan perspective.

“It’s an exciting time. We’re going into a season where we’re the defending champs and we’re going to get everybody’s best. But we are the best – in my opinion, me being a fan of the Seahawks and of my home city – and have a real good shot of defending the title. And definitely I feel we have the best fans to help support it.”
