Phil Bates re-signed as Lemuel Jeanpierre goes on IR

Posted Sep 3, 2014

The significance of Lemuel Jeanpierre’s “out” status for Thursday night’s regular-season opener became apparent when the Seahawks’ backup center was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. Wide receiver Phil Bates was re-signed to fill his roster spot.

Coach Pete Carroll alluded to the significance of Lemuel Jeanpierre’s “out” status for Thursday night’s regular-season opener during his post-walkthrough Q&A session on Wednesday.

“We’ll find out in a little bit,” Carroll said. “I’ll let you know a little later.”

Jeanpierre has now been placed on injured reserve because of the neck injury that prevented him from practicing this week. Wide receiver Phil Bates was signed to fill Jeanpierre’s spot on the 53-man roster. Bates made the cut to 53 on Saturday, but was waived on Monday when wide receiver Bryan Walters was re-signed after being waived on the final roster cut.

But Jeanpierre’s role as the backup to Pro Bowl center Max Unger will be filled by Stephen Schilling, the Bellevue High School and University of Michigan product who was signed in March after playing the past three seasons with the San Diego Chargers.

“Schilling is ready to go,” Carroll said. “Steve had a great camp for us, did a great job to play guard and center for us. We’re ready to go with Schill this week. We know that he can play. He did a great job this camp.”
