Head coach Pete Carroll met with the Seahawks media ahead of Monday's "Turnover Thursday" practice at Renton's Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
Carroll shared thoughts on the team's upcoming regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers, which is set for Thursday, Sept. 4 at Seattle's CenturyLink Field.
"Well, we've all been waiting to get this thing started," said Carroll. "We're honored to be playing this first Thursday in the first game of the year. For everyone that just loves this game so much it's really cool to get it started. It's a great matchup. We have a fantastic opponent and a staff that we respect tremendously. It's everything that you could ask for on opening night. So we're pretty fortunate that we're in good shape, pretty healthy going in."
Here are key takeaways from Carroll's Monday presser:
- Carroll said running back
Christine Michaelis "banged up" and the team will figure out his status later in the week. Cornerback Jeremy Lane, who missed the last week of practice with a sore groin, will practice today.
Tharold Simon, who missed last week's preseason game against the Raiders to rest a sore knee, remains a "little banged up," Carroll said.
- In last week's game against the Raiders, Carroll said he was most-excited about the play of Pro Bowl caliber left tackle
Russell Okung, who saw his most action of the preseason after coming back from offseason foot surgery.
- On the addition of
Marcus Burley, who the Seahawks acquired on cut-down day in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, Carroll said they liked what they saw from the second-year defensive back in preseason, noting his work as a "physical tackler" and an ability to play both the inside and outside cornerback spots.
- And if there was any doubt remaining, Carroll said All-Pro free safety
Earl Thomaswill be the team's primary punt returner.
