James Carpenter will start for Seahawks in preseason home opener

Posted Aug 15, 2014

The Seahawks will have left guard James Carpenter back for Friday night’s preseason home opener, but center Max Unger and left tackle Russell Okung will once again sit out.

James Carpenter will make his 2014 debut in the Seahawks’ preseason home opener against the San Diego Chargers at CenturyLink Field on Friday night, and he might even be blocking for running back Marshawn Lynch.

Carpenter, who sat out last week’s exhibition opener against the Broncos in Denver, is listed as starter at left guard and Lynch is not among the players listed as “not expected to play.” The Seahawks’ leading rusher also did not play against the Broncos after reporting late to training camp. But Pro Bowl center Max Unger and Pro Bowl left tackle Russell Okung will sit out for the second consecutive game. Unger missed the opener with a groin injury, while Okung is coming off of offseason foot surgery.

Not Expected To Play:

C Max Unger

T Russell Okung

WR David Gilreath

CB A.J. Jefferson

CB Eric Pinkins

SS Kam Chancellor

LB Bruce Irvin

LB Malcolm Smith

MLB Bobby Wagner

LB Korey Toomer

OG C.J. Davis

DT Jimmy Staten

DT Michael Brooks

WR Kevin Norwood

With Wagner (hamstring) still out, rookie free agent Brock Coyle will start at middle linebacker and Mike Morgan will be at strong-side linebacker because Smith (offseason ankle surgery) and Irvin (offseason hip surgery) won’t play. Alvin Bailey will start at left tackle for Okung and Lemuel Jeanpierre at center for Unger. Jeron Johnson starts at strong safety for Chancellor (offseason hip surgery).
