Fred Couples teaming up with Steven Hauschka for Boeing Classic

Posted Aug 16, 2014

In the Boeing Classic’s 10th anniversary, Seahawks season ticket member Fred Couples and Steve Ballmer are scheduled to take aim alongside Seahawks low handicapper Steven Hauschka.

The Seattle Seahawks have supported the Boeing Classic since its beginning in 2005. Each year during training camp, two PGA Tour Champions Tour pros visit Seahawks practice for a closet to the pin competition with Seahawks “golfers”. This being the tournament’s 10th anniversary, the Boeing Company has engineered a floating green that will be set off the shoreline of VMAC in Lake Washington and serve as the target for the 2014 competition.

This year, Seahawks season ticket member Fred Couples and Steve Ballmer are scheduled to take aim alongside Seahawks low handicapper Steven Hauschka. Wide receivers Bryan Walters and Jermaine Kearse will also take swings.

What is it about football that you like?

Easy. Seattle Seahawks home games. It’s the greatest thing I ever did, buying Seahawks season tickets.

If you fantasize about being a pro football player, who do you see yourself as? Why?

I’d like to be a quarterback with the best offensive line in the NFL.

What play in a football game gives you the biggest rush?

When the Seahawks or their opponent goes for it on a 4th & 1 or 4th & 2. Or, of course, a two-minute drive in the 4th Quarter

What is more nerve-wracking – being in the stands while Steven Haushka kicks a game-winning field goal in the SuperBowl or playing on Sunday of a Major?

It’s way more nerve-wracking for me to be playing in a Major because Steven never misses. He is awesome.

What is it about golf that you like?

The competition – trying to do your best and the fact that you can be nervous over a 5 foot putt in the middle of May that doesn’t even matter. Just trying to do the best that you can, there are so many variables in golf, it’s really hard. It’s probably the hardest game out there. It’s a challenge to do the best you can at an imperfect sport.

If you fantasize about being a pro golfer, who do you see yourself as? Why?

Maybe Dustin Johnson... He’s tall and athletic, probably more athletic than me but he can hit the ball a long way. That’s kind of what I’d like to be like playing golf.

What shot during a round gives you the biggest rush?

Hitting a Green in two on a Par 5

What is more nerve-wracking – watching Fred Couples with a putt on 18 to win the Masters or kicking a game-winning field goal in the Super Bowl?

That’s a tough one. Everyone is going to be nervous watching that field goal kick. It’s funny when I watch sports; I get more nervous for the people playing them but when I’m playing myself I’m not that nervous because I’m in the zone. I’m always more nervous watching other people play.
