A very special (teams) happy birthday to Heath Farwell

Posted Dec 31, 2013

The Seahawks have their own New Year’s baby. It’s special-teams captain Heath Farwell, whose New Year’s Eve celebration this year includes celebrating his 32nd birthday.

On a team of young stars, Heath Farwell is an undeniable veteran presence.

The proof is in his play on special teams, as he led the Seahawks in coverage tackles in 2011 and 2012 and finished in a tie for second this season. The further evidence is the fact that he has been a special- teams captain the past two seasons. Need more? Check out his stop of the Rams’ Daryl Richardson for a 1-yard loss on third-and-1 during the goal-line stand that iced the Week 8 victory in St. Louis.

So there’s always reason to celebrate Farwell’s presence, but Tuesday is his 32nd birthday. Yes, the Seahawks have their own New Year’s baby.

But what to get someone who, like most of his teammates in the Seahawks’ locker room, already has so much?

“Heath is really into motor bikes and stuff like that,” said Chris Maragos, a backup safety and special-teams standout. “When they brought in the motocross racing here in Seattle in the spring, he was really into that. So he’d probably enjoy something like that.

“He’s got a lot of great stuff already, but probably something like that.”

And because it is Farwell, one of the main motors that drive the Seahawks’ No. 5-ranked special teams, whatever it is that he receives will have to be full throttle.

So on this New Year’s Eve, a very special (teams) happy birthday to Heath Farwell.
