A happy he’s-only-25 birthday to Earl Thomas

Posted May 7, 2014

Wednesday is Earl Thomas’ 25th birthday, but the Seahawks’ All-Pro free safety already has accomplished enough to fill a life twice that long.

Earl Thomas just completed quite a year, and each achievement along the way was accompanied by a tagline that was equal parts admiration and astonishment.

The Seahawks’ fourth-year free safety was voted All-Pro for the second consecutive season, and he was only 24.

Thomas also was voted to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive season, and he was only 24.

In the most successful season in franchise history, Thomas was the only player in the NFL with at least 100 tackles and five interceptions, and he was only 24.

Thomas finished third in the balloting for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and he was only 24.

He had 11 tackles in the Seahawks’ playoff-opening victory over the New Orleans Saints, and he was only 24.

Thomas had seven tackles and a pass defensed as the Seahawks shutdown the highest-scoring offense in NFL history during their 43-8 romp over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, and he was only 24.

Last week, he signed a contract extension that made him the highest-paid safety in the NFL, and he was only 24.

Well, that tagline changed Wednesday, because Thomas turned 25. So now everything he accomplishes in the 2014 season as the Seahawks look to defend the first Super Bowl title in franchise history can be accompanied by “and he’s only 25.”

So we wish a happy he’s-only-25 birthday to Earl Thomas, who already has achieved so much in his still young life.
