A happy hang-time birthday to Jon Ryan

Posted Nov 26, 2013

Tuesday is the 32nd birthday of Jon Ryan, the Seahawks’ record-setting punter.

Jon Ryan might not be the punter who has everything, but he is the punter who has done just about everything.

Just check his resume – which doubles as the punting section of the Seahawks’ record book:

Longest punt – a franchise-record 77-yarder against the 49ers in 2011.

Highest career average – 44.9 yards, also the franchise record.

Highest season average – 46.6 yards in 2011, also the franchise record.

Highest net average in a season – 40.8 yards in 2012, also the franchise record.

Most punts inside the 20-yard line in a season – 34 in 2011, which tied Jeff Feagles’ club record from 1999.

Most punts inside the 20-yard line in a game – 6, three times, which shares the franchise record with Rick Tuten (1996) and Feagles (1999 and 2001).

Most career punts – 443, second to Tuten (554)

Most punts in a season – 95 in 2011, which ties for second with Jeff West (1984) behind Tuten (108 in 1992).

Most punts in a game – 11 in 2008, second behind Tuten (12 in 1993).

And this season, Ryan and his coverage units have allowed a league-low 15 return yards as Ryan has opted for hang-time and directional punts rather than booming punts.

So, what do you get the punter who pretty much has done it all for his birthday? We asked because that what Tuesday is – Ryan’s 32nd birthday.

The smile that washes across the face of special-teams captain Heath Farwell tips his answer when asked about the Seahawks’ Canadian-born punter.

“An ice-cold 12-pack of Molson Ice,” Farwell said. “You’ve got to get him Molson’s, right?”
