When the Seahawks walked to midfield for the coin toss before Sunday’s NFC Championship game there were a pair of 79’s involved.
One was defensive captain
Asked in the locker room after the Seahawks’ 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers about the “imposter” wearing “his” number, Bryant laughed and offered, “He’s the original. He’s still the man.”
Green also happens to be Bryant’s father-in-law, and Tuesday just happens to be Green’s 57th birthday.
But then Green already has so much. A great family that continues to grow, as Janelle, his daughter and Bryant’s wife, has two children. His charitable work, which has raised millions of dollars for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. And, of course, his place in Seahawks history – with those 116 career sacks; 28 forced fumbles and 17 fumble recoveries, also the most in franchise history; 718 tackles, No. 5 on the club’s all-time list; 176 games started, No. 3 on the all-time list; and one of the 10 people in the Ring of Honor.
So, a very happy birthday to Jacob Green, who proves on a daily basis that it’s better to give than to receive.
