WORD OF THE DAY: OPPORTUNITY
“We’ve historically really leaned on our young guys and played them a lot in the preseason. And they’re going to play a lot in this game,” coach Pete Carroll said after his team’s walkthrough/practice. “The bulk of the game will be played by the young guys.
“We’ll be really excited to see them and our guys will be cheering for them.”
Carroll is matching those words with actions.
“It is that time of year of opportunity. It’s what’s going on right now,” he said. “These guys have dreamed their whole life of being in the NFL and having a chance to play. Here it is. So we’ll kind of dedicate this night tonight and the game tomorrow to these young guys playing in their first NFL game.” Read
INJURY UPDATES: KEVIN NORWOOD HAS BONE SPUR REMOVED
|STAT DU JOUR: ANYONE FOR 10 IN A ROW?|
The Seahawks carry a nine-game preseason winning streak into Thursday night’s opener against the Broncos in Denver. It’s the longest in franchise history, by a wide margin: Read
Rookie wide receiver Kevin Norwood, a fourth-round pick in May’s NFL Draft, had a bone spur removed from his foot on Tuesday and is among those players who will not participate in the preseason opener.
“It was a real nagging situation that we just didn’t want him to try and tough it out,” Carroll said. “He could tough it out. He has in the past. But we want to try and fix him and get him right. We’re glad to fix him. This guy has been playing with a lot of pain. He just sucks it up and goes through it. We figured out, hopefully, how to help him.”
Norwood could return by the end of training camp, Carroll said.
Norwood was one of 12 players who did not take part in Wednesday’s on-field session, a group that also included linebackers Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin, Malcolm Smith, Korey Toomer and Kevin Pierre-Louis; defensive backs DeShawn Shead, Akeem Auguste and Eric Pinkins; defensive linemen Jordan Hill and Jimmy Staten; and wide receiver David Gilreath, who has a concussion. The team flew to Denver after Wednesday’s practice for Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Broncos at Sports Authority Field. Yes, it’s a rematch of the teams that met in Super Bowl XLVIII – a game the Seahawks won 43-8 – but don’t expect the Seahawks to place any added significance on the preseason opener because of that.
“It’s not just a Denver thing,” All-Pro strong safety Kam Chancellor said. “It’s anybody – anybody who is on our schedule. It’s the next team up. That’s who means the most to us. Whoever we have right now, that means the most to us. And that’s how it goes from game to game this season.”
The players are off on Friday, will hold a review walkthrough on Saturday and return to the practice field on Sunday – the next-to-last of the sold-out sessions that are open to fans. Read
