Social Scene: Earl Thomas shares contract extension with Seahawks family
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson hosted his first event benefitting his Why Not You Foundation. Wilson debuted his very own Costacos Brothers poster at the event, where two autographed copies were auctioned off for $30,000 each. Former Seahawks Steve Largent and Brian Bosworth, who also have their own Costacos Brothers posters, were in attendance and participated in the panel with Wilson, John and Tock Costacos. The event raised over $400,000. Watch
Earl Thomas is usually on time for everything.
But on Tuesday, when the Seahawks would announce a four-year contract extension for the 24-year-old three-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro free safety, the knows-one-speed Thomas was slowed by members of his own family who were in town for Thomas' big day.
Traveling to Renton's Virginia Mason Athletic Center with his mother Debbie, father Earl Jr., brother Seth, girlfriend Nina Heisser and their 18-month-old daughter Kaleigh Rose made for a slightly speedier trip on Lake Washington Blvd., where Thomas was stopped by police just before turning left on Seahawks Way.
"I didn’t try to bulldog him and say, 'My name is Earl Thomas' because then he’d be like, 'Man, this dude is cocky' and give me a ticket," Thomas told reporters of his encounter with authorities. "But he let me off. That’s the moral of the story.”
Upon arriving at the team facility, Tuesday quickly became all about Thomas. But the Seahawks' 2010 first-round draft pick wouldn't want you to look at it that way.
Thomas entered the VMAC auditorium accompanied by general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll. The trio posed for photos on stage prior to taking their place at the microphones on the table in front of them.
"Everybody that came up just a while ago really helped me in my growth," Thomas said. "It was really important for me to share this moment because it’s not about me. It’s about the people that helped me along the way too. When I say I’m in, it’s not just about football. It’s about the connection I’m starting to really realize when you really use your resources right some magic can happen."
On a day when so many people occupied "Area 29," there was one individual close to Thomas who couldn't make it - the man after which Thomas and his father were named.
"Wish my grandad could be here to witness what god has done!" Thomas captioned on his Instagram page coupled with the photo below. "The rock that started the foundation for the whole Fam..I appreciate everything you instilled and taught me I will always keep your name strong..EARL THOMAS lll" Read
