Tight end Travis Beckum signed
After being out of the league during the 2013 season, Travis Beckum is hoping to restart his career with the Seahawks.
The 6-foot-3, 234-pound tight end was signed to a free-agent contract Monday. Also signed were linebacker Mike Taylor and defensive back Terrance Parks.
Beckum was selected in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He caught 26 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns in his first three seasons before tearing a knee ligament in the Giants’ victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI after the 2011 season.
Because of the injury, Beckum played just 23 snaps in four games in 2012 before sitting out last season.
With the Seahawks, he joins a tight end group that includes starter Zach Miller, rookie backup Luke Willson, No. 3 man Kellen Davis, Anthony McCoy, the former backup who spent the 2013 season on injured reserve; and Cooper Helfet, who has been on the practice squad the past two seasons.
The Seahawks signed nine other players to free-agent contracts last week: cornerback Akeem Auguste, wide receivers Phil Bates and Arceto Clark, defensive tackles Michael Brooks, Dewayne Cherrington and D’Anthony Smith, quarterback B.J. Daniels, offensive lineman Jared Smith and Helfet.
