A happy sack-filled birthday Chris Clemons
The Seahawks and the Panthers have faced off 11 times, including three postseason matchups. The Seahawks currently own seven wins in the series and will play the Panthers again this Sunday at CenturyLink Field during Week 13 on Sunday Night Football. View
Wednesday is Chris Clemons’ 32nd birthday. And it doesn’t matter what you get the Seahawks’ Leo end, as long as you put it in a sack.
Getting to the opposing quarterback has been Clemons’ deal since the Seahawks acquired him in a 2010 trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to fill the hybrid spot in coach Pete Carroll’s defense. Clemons had 11 sacks each in 2010 and 2011. He added a career-best 11.5 last season. This season, despite missing the first two games while completing his rehab from knee surgery in January, Clemons has 3.5 sacks.
Things evened out a bit last season, when five of his 11.5 sacks came at CenturyLink Field, including four in the Week 3 upset of the Green Bay Packers. But this season, three of his 3.5 sacks have come in road games.
What’s the deal? “Getting off the ball at home, you can’t hear really anything,” Clemons explained. “That’s not an excuse for me not being able to produce at home as much as I do on the road. But teams tend to play us differently at home, with quick throws and things like that. When they’re at home, they think they have a better opportunity because of the hard counts and because of the snap count. So they get an opportunity to drop back more.”
And the more they drop back, the more opportunities Clemons has to drop them.
