Wide receiver Bryan Walters was elevated from the Seahawks’ practice squad to the 53-man roster on Saturday, and you could see this move unfolding during the week as the team prepared for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans at CenturyLink Field.
Walters, who was a quarterback at Kirkland’s Juanita High School before going to Cornell, got ample reps with the Seahawks’ offense – as well as his usual practice-squad duties against the Seahawks’ defense.
Asked about that on Thursday, Walter said, “If I’m needed, I’ll be ready. No question about that.”
And look who’s needed. The Seahawks were down to four wide receivers after Stephen Williams was waived last Saturday to clear a roster spot for linebacker/rush-end Bruce Irvin, who was returning from his four-game suspension. Williams was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
To clear a spot for Walters, center Jason Spitz was released. And there’s even some symmetry in that move, because Spitz was signed after All-Pro center Max Unger went down with an upper arm injury in the Week 3 game against the Jaguars. With Unger returning this week, Spitz became expendable.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Walters entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2010 with the San Diego Chargers. He spent the final five weeks of his rookie season on the Chargers’ practice squad. In 2011, he played in four games with the Chargers. He signed with Minnesota Vikings during 2012 offseason, but was released during training camp. He joined the Seahawks’ practice squad last December. Read
