WORD OF THE DAY: HAMSTRING
The official end-of-the-week status report, as issued by the team:
For the Panthers:
As in Brandon Browner’s left one. The Seahawks’ 6-foot-4 cornerback injured it during practice on Wednesday and did not practice on Thursday or Friday, so he has been listed as questionable for the Sunday’s game against the Panthers in Carolina.
But Pete Carroll said after practice that the final decision on Browner’s status will be made Sunday.
“We’re going to wait and see on game day,” Carroll said. “See how he does.”
If Browner can’t play, Walter Thurmond and Byron Maxwell will replace him on the right side – Thurmond in the base defense and Maxwell in the nickel, when Thurmond slides inside to cover the slot receiver.
Browner, of course, had a huge play in the Seahawks’ 16-12 victory over the Panthers last season when he stripped the ball and recovered the fumble to set up the go-ahead score.
PLAYER WATCH: JAMES CARPENTER
The third-year guard will play against the Panthers, Carroll said. It will mark Carpenter’s first regular-season game action since Week 13 last season.
“He’s ready to go,” Carroll said. “He had a great comeback and he took more reps than anybody. We’re trying to do that to make sure he’s in condition well enough to play, and he is. So we’re fired up that he made it back.”
Carpenter got some reps during the week at left guard with the No. 1 line, but most of his practice time came with the No. 2 line.
OPPONENT WATCH: LEFT GUARD
|STAT DU JOUR: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BALL|
In the last two seasons under Carroll, the Seahawks have generated 62 takeaways compared to 41 giveaways. They are 17-3 when winning the turnover battle since 2010. Here’s a look at their record by seasons in those games:
With Amini Silatolu not practicing on Friday and listed as questionable for the Panthers, Chris Scott worked at left guard. Coach Ron Rivera told reporters in Charlotte that Travelle Wharton likely would rotate with Scott at the guard spot between veteran left tackle Jordan Gross and center Ryan Kalil. Wharton was not signed until after training camp.
UP NEXT: A WALKTHROUGH IN CHARLOTTE
The team left for Charlotte after Friday’s practice and will hold a walkthrough there on Saturday.

“Our Leos are almost as big as their quarterback.” – Carroll, comparing the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Cam Newton, the Panthers QB, to the players who could see time at the Leo end position: 6-3, 242-pound O’Brien Schofield; 6-3, 252-pound Benson Mayowa; and 6-3, 226-pound Mike Morgan.
