Kam Chancellor hosts back-to-school drive at Seattle's Union Gospel Mission
Seattle Seahawks players will have the chance to share the causes that are important to them during all Week 13 games, as part of the NFL's My Cause, My Cleats campaign. Defensive end Cliff Avril, wide receiver Doug Baldwin, tight end Jimmy Graham, cornerback Richard Sherman, and quarterback Russell Wilson all chose to participate, personalizing their footwear to help tell their stories. Monday may have been marked as a players day off, but strong safety Kam Chancellor was hard at work. Hard at work in the community.
Chancellor conducted a back-to-school supply drive at Seattle's Union Gospel Mission, surprising a room of more than 600 students and their families at the mission's youth services gym in Rainier Valley. Through his Kam Cares foundation, Chancellor donated $5,000 to the mission to provide backpacks and school supplies to the Seattle-area youth.
"I felt great about it," Chancellor said Tuesday while walking off the team's practice field at Virginia Mason Athletic Center. "Just going there and seeing the kids and how they responded from it - all the smiles, the thank yous. It made me feel good."
No doubt that five of those smiles and thanks yous came from the lucky quintet who pulled golden tickets out of their backpacks in a Willy-Wonka-esque move. The golden ticket signified the student had won a tour of the Seahawks training facility and an afternoon at practice, with Chancellor as their host.
On top of his gift to the Seattle mission, Chancellor donated another $5,000 to the Urban League of Hampton Roads, a program set up near his hometown of Norfolk, Va.
"It's something that I've been wanting to do since I became fortunate enough to do it," said Chancellor. "I wanted to start it here in Seattle and continue it back home. It's a positive move all for the kids."
The Hampton Roads back-to-school supply drive, set for August 29 at Virginia's Park Place Community Center, wraps up a series of summer charity events put on by Chancellor and his Kam Cares foundation. Read
