I was a military child from the beginning – literally, because I was born in Madigan Hospital at Fort Lewis. So getting the opportunity to go to the Naval Hospital was momentous for me, because I was eager to meet some of those courageous people on a personal level.
The touching stories I heard from families, captains, nurses and doctors will be with me for a lifetime. After meeting with families, I have the highest regard for each and every one of them because I have been in their shoes.
The experience has made me proud of my own family and honored to have had them serve our country. It also showed me what a powerful and accomplished 12th MAN we really have.

When I was asked to visit Naval Hospital Bremerton, I immediately said yes. I was so excited to visit and connect with our servicemen and women. I knew it would be a wonderful experience, but I had no idea how deep it would truly touch my heart.
It was incredibly touching seeing how excited everyone was that we were there to see them. There were even a few patients that had their Seahawks gear on. As I met more and more patients, I became completely overwhelmed with gratitude toward these men and women for putting their lives on the line for our country’s freedom – for my freedom.
One of the best experiences was meeting Bill. He has served in three wars and is currently in the ICU. Bill and his son attend all the Seahawks games they can, and they had such a strong passion for the game and for the Hawks. Bill wasn’t able to come down to the first floor where we were located, so we went to him. He was still under some physical stress, but that didn’t stop his charismatic and upbeat personality from shining through. He even batted his eyes and flirted with Sea Gal Olivia. His family thanked us again and again for visiting with him, but I kept thanking them in return for the sacrifices they had made for me, my family and our nation.
It was truly incredible getting to spend time with our country’s finest. Each one of them had a direct effect on me and I am truly thankful for them, as well as being thankful for getting to be a part of something that allows me to give back to them in any way I can. I am looking forward to make another trip to the Naval Hospital.
